All features are available, and you can choose the server that suits you best. Norton, on the other hand, gives you Norton Secure VPN, a full-featured no-limits VPN that you can use on five devices. That’s low compared to the price of most standalone VPNs, but it’s an extra fee. Unlimited bandwidth and the power to select the server you want costs an additional $39.99 per year. You don’t get a choice of which VPN server to use, and you’re limited to 200MB of bandwidth per day. With Bitdefender, you get a limited VPN powered by Hotspot Shield. As a bonus, using a VPN to tunnel into a foreign country can get you (possibly illicit) access to region-locked content.īoth Bitdefender and Norton offer Mac users VPN protection for their communications, but the offerings are quite different. Snoops trying to deduce your location based on your IP address will get the VPN server’s address instead, leaving them to think you’re in Boise, or Barcelona. Nobody can snoop on that connection’s data, not even the sketchy owner of the unsecured Wi-Fi network you’re using. The VPN creates an encrypted connection, sometimes called a tunnel, between your device and one of the VPN company’s servers. That’s why many security companies now include a Virtual Private Network, or VPN in their security suites or antivirus tools. The antivirus protects data that’s on your Mac, but when you send that data out across the internet the antivirus loses its mojo. Kaspersky holds one perfect score, while Bitdefender has one perfect score and one recent almost-perfect rating. Note, though, that just last month, before the newest report, Bitdefender had a 17.5-point score from AV-Test, enough to earn it the designation Top Product. Bitdefender didn’t appear in the latest report from this lab. Kaspersky aced all three, for a perfect 18 points. An antivirus can earn up to six points in each category. Products succeed in that third category by avoiding false positives, valid files or URLs reported as malicious.

Bitdefender earned perfect scores across the board, detecting 100% of Mac malware, Mac PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications), and Windows malware. The latest report from AV-Comparatives includes Bitdefender, but Kaspersky wasn’t tested. A good score from one of these labs goes a long way toward proving a product’s efficacy. Two of these labs also run tests on macOS antivirus products. We follow four independent antivirus testing labs that regularly test and report on Windows-based antivirus products, rating them to indicate which are the most effective. So how do we know these Mac-specific products even work? Our malware samples likewise infect Windows, not any other operating system. But these utilities, developed over a period of years, don't run under macOS.
